Many people feel that because they purchased a new vehicle, they don’t need to do any maintenance. While there is a lot less maintenance on a new vehicle compared to an older one, there are still some basic things you should do to keep your new vehicle in optimal condition for as long as possible. Here are a few tips from Gerry’s OK Tire.

1) Break in your vehicle gently
Every new car has a break in period as all the components are brand new and need to be ‘broken in’. The break in period is usually the first 1600 km. During the break in period, there are many things you should keep in mind. You need to be gentle with your driving and avoid transporting heavy loads, such as towing a trailer and using a roof-rack.It is also recommended that that you keep your speed under 90 kph and use light to medium acceleration by keeping the revs under 3000 rpm.Breaking your car in gently will greatly reduce the strain on the new engine and will ultimately reduce the amount of money you may have to spend on repairs in the future.
2) Change your air filter regularly
A car’s air filter needs to be changed on regular basis. This is because dirty air can affect the performance of the car and damage the engine.
If the filter is clogged with dust and debris, your engine is not performing at the level it should be. By replacing your air filter, it will dramatically improve your car’s performance and also fuel efficiency. Air filters are inexpensive so there is no reason not to change them. They are key to increasing the longevity of your vehicle.
3) Check your tire pressure
Many people neglect their tires then pay the price when they become damaged. Checking your tires regularly will also help your fuel consumption and is vital for your safety. If your tires are under-inflated, it increases the amount of drag, ultimately making your engine work harder, making you use more gas.
If your tires are worn, replace them immediately. Worn tires will reduce your vehicle’s handling and reduce the traction on the road, making them very dangerous. Check the treads on your tires twice a year.
4) Clean your vehicle’s interior
When you purchase your new car, your interior will be pristine. Aim to keep it this way to prolong the life of your vehicle. Seasons, such as winter can have a detrimental effect on both the outside and inside of your vehicle if not properly maintained. Over time, moisture and dirt will accumulate in the inside of your car and can be very abrasive. To combat this, vacuum the floor mats and upholstery on a regular basis and also clean the interior with a special cleaning liquid which you can purchase from most auto departments.
5) Clean your vehicle’s exterior
As the seasons bring different conditions such as rain, sun, ice, and snow, our vehicles accumulate dirt, grime and debris over time, all of which have a detrimental effect on your car. It can lead to corrosion and damage the paint.
To combat this, regularly wash and wax the exterior of your car. Make sure you clean the undercarriage as well as it accumulates the most dirt.

6) Check and maintain your vehicle’s fluids
Once the car has been gently broken in, many people forget general maintenance such as checking the fluids regularly. Checking fluids such as the level of your oil, transmission fluid, brake and steering fluids and your antifreeze levels regularly will avoid countless problems.
Letting your fluids get too low can seriously damage your engine and ultimately result in costly repairs. It is recommended that you check your fluid levels once a month in order to avoid damage to your new car. If you know that you need an oil change book a service visit.

By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of your new vehicle and keep it looking and driving like new for as long as possible. This means fewer trips to the repair shop and more money in your pocket. If you have any questions about your new vehicle, please feel free to reach out to us any time.
