Your brakes are one of the most important safety features of your vehicle. Without working brakes, your vehicle is a hazard to you and everyone else on the road. Here is a list of 5 tell-tale signs your brakes are need of repair or replacement.
1. Your car is taking longer to stop than usual – If you notice that your car is taking longer to stop than it used to, it may be time for new brakes. Brakes typically last between 40,000 and 100,000 km, so if you’re nearing or past that range, it’s time to get them checked out.
2. You hear squealing or grinding when you brake – If you hear a squealing noise when you brake, it could be a sign that your brakes need to be replaced. The noise is usually caused by the wear indicator on your brake pads, which lets you know when the pads need to be replaced. However, if the noise is accompanied by a grinding sound, it could be a sign of more serious damage to your brakes and you should have them checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible.
3. Your car vibrates when you brake – If your car vibrates when you brake, it could be a sign of warped rotors. Rotors can become warped from extended wear or from sudden changes in temperature (like driving on a hot day after sitting in the sun). If you notice that your brakes are vibrating, have them checked out by a mechanic to see if they need to be replaced.
4. You see brake fluid leaks – If you see any brake fluid leaks, it’s important to get them fixed as soon as possible. Brake fluid is what helps your brakes work properly, so if there’s a leak, it could mean that your brakes aren’t working as they should.
